Which Vehicles Use the ZF 8HP70?

The ZF 8HP70 is the 700 Nm-rated 8-speed automatic fitted to: BMW F-series diesel — 535d, 640d, 740d, X5 30d/40d (F15), X6 (F16), M550d; Jaguar XF, XJ, F-Type V6/V8; Range Rover (L405), Range Rover Sport (L494), Discovery 4 & 5; Maserati Ghibli & Quattroporte V6; Rolls-Royce Ghost & Wraith. If you're unsure which variant you have, call us with your registration or VIN and we'll confirm it before you send anything.

Symptoms & Fault Codes We Repair

Harsh or delayed shifts, slipping between gears, limp mode (stuck in 3rd), no drive, "Gearbox malfunction" or "Transmission fault" warnings, and won't-select-gear conditions are the classic signs of valve body wear. Common codes include:

  • P270300 / P270400 — Transmission Friction Element D / E Apply Time Range/Performance
  • P2700 – P2702 — Friction Element A / B / C Apply Time Range/Performance
  • P0730 – P0736 — Incorrect gear ratio (1st through 6th)
  • P0741 / P0868 — Torque converter clutch / transmission fluid pressure low
  • BMW 4B13, 4B14, 4B15, 4B1E — Gear monitoring / clutch faults

What This Service Covers

We fully strip the hydraulic valve body, vacuum-test every valve bore, and replace worn pressure-regulator valves, boost sleeves, end caps, accumulators and solenoids as required. The rebuilt valve body is then tested on our bench rig under simulated operating pressure before it's returned to you. This listing covers the valve body only. Please note: we do not carry out TCM (transmission control module) repairs. If your fault is confirmed to be in the TCM electronics, the route is a replacement unit cloned with your original data — see our ZF 8HP70 TCM Cloning Service.

Repair vs Replacement

A new mechatronic from a main dealer is typically quoted at £800 – £2,000+ plus fitting and coding. In the large majority of 8HP70 cases the fault sits in the valve body hydraulics, which is fully repairable at a fraction of that — and because your original unit goes back in, no coding or adaptation to the vehicle is required.

How It Works

  1. 1 Purchase this listing
  2. 2 Drop the gearbox sump, remove the mechatronic unit and drain it (we can guide you through this — or use our Enfield workshop drop-off option)
  3. 3 Post it securely to our repair centre:
The Vehicle Check Office 13, 25 Mollison Avenue
    Enfield, EN3 7NJ
  4. 4 Our technicians strip, vacuum-test, rebuild and bench-test the valve body under pressure
  5. 5 Your unit is returned via tracked delivery, ready to refit
