Mercedes DSM ISM Gear Selector Module Cloning | The Vehicle Check
The Vehicle Check provides a specialist Mercedes DSM and ISM cloning service. The Direct Select Module — also known as the Intelligent Servo Module or gear selector module — is the control unit managing the gear selector function on Mercedes 7G-Tronic and 9G-Tronic automatic transmissions. When the DSM or ISM fails or needs replacing, cloning transfers all vehicle-specific data to the replacement unit — creating a plug and play solution with no dealer programming required. Nationwide mail-in postal service with drop off at our Enfield office.
What is the Mercedes DSM and ISM?
The Mercedes-Benz Direct Select Module — DSM — is the electronic control unit that manages the Direct Select gear selector system fitted to Mercedes vehicles with 7G-Tronic and 9G-Tronic automatic transmissions. The DSM is sometimes referred to as the ISM — Intelligent Servo Module — or simply the gear selector module. These terms are synonymous and refer to the same unit across different Mercedes model generations and documentation.
The DSM/ISM controls gear selection inputs from the gear selector stalk on the steering column or the gear selector switch panel, translating driver inputs into gear change commands for the transmission control unit. It holds vehicle-specific coding that must be correctly matched to the vehicle's VIN and transmission when the unit is replaced. Fitting an uncloned replacement DSM or ISM results in gear selector faults, communication errors and in many cases the gearbox refusing to engage drive. Cloning ensures the replacement unit is an exact match — plug and play with no dealer visit required. See also our Mercedes mechatronic repair page for full Mercedes transmission coverage.
DSM and ISM Fault Codes
Transmission range sensor circuit malfunction — DSM/ISM unable to correctly communicate gear selector position to TCM.
Transmission range sensor circuit range performance — selector position data outside expected parameters.
Transmission range sensor circuit low input — DSM/ISM selector signal below expected voltage threshold.
Transmission range sensor circuit high input — selector signal above expected voltage threshold indicating DSM/ISM fault.
Mercedes specific control unit fault codes stored in ETC or SBC module when DSM/ISM communication fails.
Fitting an uncloned replacement DSM/ISM causes gearbox communication errors and in many cases prevents drive engagement entirely.
DSM and ISM Fault Symptoms
- Gear selector not responding correctly — drive, reverse or park not engaging
- Transmission warning light or gear selector fault message on dashboard
- Gearbox refusing to change gear from selected position
- Communication fault between DSM/ISM and TCM stored
- Gear selector position not displayed correctly on dashboard
- Gearbox in limp mode following DSM/ISM failure
- Fault codes P0705 to P0708 stored with no obvious external cause
- Vehicle will not engage drive after uncloned DSM/ISM replacement

What You Need to Send
Cloning Existing to Donor
Send both your original DSM/ISM and the donor replacement unit. We clone all data from the original onto the donor — the cloned unit is returned plug and play ready to fit.
Original Only
In some cases we can source a suitable donor DSM/ISM on your behalf. Contact us before sending and we will advise on availability and cost.
