Toyota & Lexus Engine ECU Cloning — Mail-In UK Plug & Play
Your Toyota or Lexus has lost all communication with its engine ECU — or it started fine yesterday and today it cranks but won't fire, the immobiliser light sits steady, and every scan tool reports the engine management unit as absent or corrupt. What's actually happened is that the ECU's internal memory has failed or the unit itself has developed a hardware fault, effectively making your car's brain unreadable to the rest of the vehicle. It's more common than people realise on higher-mileage Toyota and Lexus platforms, and the good news is you almost certainly don't need a new unit from a dealer.
At The Vehicle Check we clone Toyota and Lexus engine ECUs by post, nationwide. We read every byte of data from your original unit — VIN, immobiliser coding, fuel and ignition calibration, adaptive learned values — and write it exactly onto a bench-tested replacement. The unit that comes back to you is plug-and-play: fit it, start the car. No dealer, no re-flash, no key re-programming. That's what separates a genuine clone from a second-hand swap that leaves you stranded outside a dealership at 8am.
Why Does a Toyota or Lexus Engine ECU Fail?
Toyota and Lexus ECUs are built to last, but there are well-documented failure patterns across the range. On older Avensis, Corolla and RAV4 diesels, moisture ingress through deteriorated loom grommets corrodes the ECU's power supply tracks. On hybrid platforms — Prius, Camry Hybrid, Lexus RX450h — voltage irregularities from an ageing high-voltage pack can stress the 12V ECU supply rail. Land Cruiser and Hilux units in particular see solder joint fatigue from the combination of vibration and heat cycling. The result in every case is the same: no-start, communication loss, or a cascade of unrelated fault codes that clear and return because the control unit itself is unstable.
What Does Plug-and-Play ECU Cloning Actually Mean for Your Car?
Plug-and-play means the replacement ECU leaves our workshop already believing it is your car. Toyota and Lexus immobiliser systems tie the ECU to the transponder data in your keys and, on newer platforms, to the body and network modules. A second-hand ECU from a breaker carries someone else's immobiliser data — your car will crank and cut immediately. Our cloning process transfers your data verbatim, so your original keys, your VIN, your adaptive idle and injector trims all carry across. Fit the unit, no drama.

How Does the Mail-In Service Work?
Sending your ECU to us is straightforward. Here's the process from start to finish:
- Contact us first. Call 0203 489 2610 or use our website to confirm compatibility and get a quote. We'll give you our service address: Office 13, 25 Mollison Avenue, Enfield, EN3 7NJ.
- Remove and pack your ECU. Full packaging tips are below — read them before you box anything up.
- Post it to us. We recommend Royal Mail Special Delivery or a tracked courier service for insurance cover.
- We clone it. Your unit is bench-tested, data is read, and the clone is written and verified — typically within 3–5 working days of receipt.
- We send it back. Your plug-and-play ECU returns via free tracked, insured courier. Your original unit returns with it.
How Should You Package Your Toyota or Lexus ECU for Posting?
Packaging matters — a poorly wrapped ECU can arrive with connector pins bent or boards cracked, which limits what we can do. Follow these steps and your unit will arrive safely every time:
- Wrap the ECU in at least two layers of anti-static bubble wrap. Standard bubble wrap is fine if anti-static isn't available — just avoid placing bare electronics directly onto non-static-safe materials.
- Place the wrapped unit inside a rigid cardboard box with at least 5cm of padding (scrunched paper, foam, or additional bubble wrap) on all six sides.
- Seal all edges with packing tape, not parcel tape alone — movement inside the box is the main cause of connector damage in transit.
- Include a note inside with your name, phone number, vehicle registration, and ECU part number. This speeds up processing immediately on arrival.
- Do not remove connector retaining clips or locking tabs — send the ECU as it came off the car.
Why Does Mail-In Beat the Dealer for Toyota and Lexus ECU Replacement?
A Toyota or Lexus main dealer will quote you for a new ECU from Denso — typically £600–£1,400 depending on the platform — plus programming time billed at main dealer labour rates, plus potentially a key re-learn procedure. The cloned unit has to be ordered in, booked, and you're without your vehicle for days. With TVC's mail-in service, turnaround is 3–5 working days, return delivery is free, and because the cloned unit carries your original data it's genuinely plug-and-play — no labour bill at the other end. For most Toyota and Lexus owners the saving is several hundred pounds. For fleet operators or anyone running an older vehicle where dealer investment doesn't make economic sense, cloning is the only rational choice.
What Is TVC's Experience With Toyota and Lexus Electronics?
The Vehicle Check has been repairing and cloning automotive electronics since the mid-2010s, working across European, Japanese and American platforms. Our bench testing infrastructure covers Denso, Bosch ME and Toyota-specific proprietary ECU families. We clone Toyota and Lexus units regularly — from sub-£10,000 Yarises to six-figure Land Cruiser 300 series — and every unit we return has been verified on the bench before dispatch. We also handle DSG and Mercedes mechatronic repair and cloning, clutch actuator repair, BCM, BSI and FRM module cloning, and SRS airbag and crash data reset — so if your Toyota or Lexus has multiple electronics faults, there's a good chance we can solve more than one in the same visit or the same postal package.
Is There a Warranty on the Cloned ECU?
Yes. Every cloned ECU we supply carries a warranty against cloning defects. If the unit develops a fault directly related to our work within the warranty period, we'll put it right. We'll always talk you through the terms specific to your unit when you call — 0203 489 2610.
