The Toyota Auris ECT System — What Fails and Why

The Electronically Controlled Transmission fitted to the Toyota Auris uses a dedicated control module to manage gear selection, torque converter lock-up and shift timing. When this module develops an internal fault — typically caused by heat cycling, power surge or board-level component failure — the symptoms range from rough or delayed shifts to complete loss of automatic gear selection and a stored transmission warning code.

The ECT module on the Auris is repairable at component level in the majority of fault cases. We strip the module, identify the specific failed component — capacitors, voltage regulators and processor support circuits are the most common causes — and repair it properly before returning it tested and warranted.

Automatic Gearbox Warning Light

Stored transmission codes on the Auris that won't clear, or that return after clearing, often point to a control module fault rather than a mechanical gearbox issue.

Sluggish or Delayed Shifts

When the Auris takes longer than normal to shift between gears, or shifts harshly instead of smoothly, the ECT module is controlling the solenoids incorrectly.

Stuck in a Single Gear

If the Auris locks into a fixed gear and won't shift up or down, the ECT module has likely entered a fail-safe mode triggered by an internal fault — repairable.

No Communication With TCU

A completely unresponsive ECT module that won't talk to a diagnostic tool has usually suffered an internal power supply failure — repairable in most cases.
