MINI FRM3 Footwell Module Repair by Post UK | The Vehicle Check
MINI FRM3 Footwell Module Repair by Post — Nationwide UK Mail-In Service
Your MINI hasn't forgotten how to be fun to drive — it's just got a faulty circuit board sitting in the footwell. When the FRM3 footwell module fails, it takes half the car's electrical personality with it: windows refuse to move, lights go dark at the worst moments, wipers freeze mid-wipe, indicators behave like they're possessed, and a constellation of warning lights appears on the dash without warning. It feels dramatic, but the fix is usually a targeted repair to one small module — not a five-figure dealer bill. Post it to us, and we'll have it back on your doorstep working properly within 3–5 days.
The Vehicle Check is a dedicated UK automotive electronics repair specialist based in Enfield, EN3. We work on electronic modules from BMW, MINI, Ford, Mercedes, VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda and more — from ECU cloning and repair to ABS module restoration. The FRM3 is one of the modules we see most frequently, and it's one we know inside out.
What Does the MINI FRM3 Footwell Module Actually Do?
The FRM3 — Footwell Module 3 — is the central electronics hub that manages most of the body electrical functions in R5x and R6x generation MINIs. It controls interior and exterior lighting (including adaptive headlights), electric window operation, door locks and central locking, windscreen wiper timing and wash functions, turn signals and hazard lights, and communicates with the instrument cluster and CAS (Car Access System). When it goes wrong, the symptoms scatter across every system it touches — which is exactly why a straightforward fault can look bafflingly complex from the outside.
What Causes the FRM3 to Fail?
The most common failure mode is cracked or dry solder joints on the FRM3 printed circuit board — a well-documented weakness in this generation of MINI modules. Repeated heat cycling, moisture ingress from a leaking windscreen or door seal, and voltage spikes from jump-starts or a failing battery accelerate the degradation. The result is intermittent or total loss of the functions the module controls. In some cases a failed update or a reset performed without the correct tool causes the module's programming to become corrupted, which we can also address.
Which MINI Models Does the FRM3 Footwell Module Fit?
The FRM3 is fitted across the second-generation MINI range, including the R56 Hatch, R55 Clubman, R57 Convertible, R58 Coupé, R59 Roadster, R60 Countryman and R61 Paceman — models built roughly between 2006 and 2015. If your MINI is in that window and you're seeing the electrical gremlins described above, the FRM3 is almost certainly involved. Not sure? How Does the Mail-In Repair Work?
Our mail-in repair service is designed to be as painless as possible. Here's exactly what happens:
- Remove the FRM3. It's located in the driver's footwell area, usually clipped to a bracket beneath the lower dash panel. A panel trim tool, a T20 Torx and about 20 minutes is typically all it takes. Guides are available on MINI forums if you've not done it before, or call us and we'll talk you through it.
- Pack it properly. Wrap the module securely in bubble wrap — at least two layers — and place it inside a small rigid cardboard box with some padding around it. Don't use a padded envelope alone; rigid protection prevents connector damage in transit. Include a sheet of paper with your name, return address, phone number and a brief description of what the car is doing.
- Post it tracked. Use Royal Mail Tracked 48, Evri, DPD or any tracked courier service to our address: Office 13, 25 Mollison Avenue, Enfield, EN3 7LW. Keep your tracking reference until it's safely back in your car.
- We diagnose and repair. Once received, we run full diagnostics on the bench, carry out the required repair — whether that's reflowing solder joints, replacing failed components, or restoring corrupted module data — and test every function the FRM3 controls before signing it off.
- We return it free. Your repaired FRM3 comes back to you via free tracked return postage, typically within 3–5 working days of receipt. If we find something unexpected — say, catastrophic board damage that changes the scope of the repair — we'll contact you first. No surprises, no invoices you haven't agreed to.
Why Does Mail-In Beat Going to a MINI Dealer?
A main dealer's standard response to a failed FRM3 is a new unit — which comes coded to nothing and needs programming to your car, adding a coding fee on top of the parts cost. Total dealer spend for FRM3 replacement commonly runs to £400–£800 or more. We repair your original unit, retain all its existing data, and return it plug-and-play for a fraction of that. No coding appointment, no second trip, no hire car while you wait. Your MINI doesn't know it was ever away.
Is the Repair Plug-and-Play When It Comes Back?
Yes. We preserve your module's original coding data throughout the repair process. When it arrives back and you refit it, it reconnects to your vehicle's systems exactly as it did before — no dealer coding session required, no additional programming costs, no surprises. Refitting it is the reverse of removal: takes around 20 minutes with basic tools.
What Warranty Do You Get on a Repaired FRM3?
Every FRM3 repair we carry out is covered by our standard repair warranty. If the same fault recurs within the warranty period, we'll deal with it — that's the commitment we make on every job that leaves our bench.
