How Do I Remove and Package My 9G Mechatronic Unit Safely?

Step 1 — Removing the mechatronic unit
The 9G-Tronic mechatronic unit is accessed by removing the gearbox sump pan (allow ATF fluid to drain into a suitable container first). The unit is secured by bolts and a wiring harness connector. Any competent mechanic or confident DIYer with a Mercedes STAR or compatible scan tool can do this job — it typically takes 60–90 minutes. If you'd rather have a local independent do the removal, that's absolutely fine.
Step 2 — Cleaning and draining before packing
Wipe the unit down with a clean cloth. Allow any residual ATF to drain fully — standing it upright on some clean rags for 20–30 minutes does the job. A dry unit is a safe unit to post.
Step 3 — Packaging the unit
- Wrap the mechatronic unit in at least two layers of bubble wrap, paying extra attention to the wiring harness connectors
- Place it inside a sturdy double-walled cardboard box with a minimum 5cm of packing material (foam, bubble wrap, or crumpled paper) on all sides
- Do not use a single-walled box — gearbox components are heavy enough to punch through in transit
- Seal with strong packing tape — two full loops around the box in both directions
- Include a note inside with your name, phone number, vehicle registration, and a brief description of the fault
