FRM3 Data Repair — Post Your Module, Get It Back Fixed
Your BMW or Mini is sitting on the drive with dead exterior lights, windows that have stopped responding, or door mirrors that couldn't care less what you ask of them. Nine times out of ten that points to a corrupted FRM3 footwell module — and the good news is you almost certainly don't need a new one. You just need the data inside it fixed. That's exactly what we do here at The Vehicle Check, and you can get it sorted without stepping foot outside your house.
What Is FRM3 Data Repair and Why Does the Module Fail?
FRM3 data corruption happens when the module loses its programmed configuration — most commonly caused by a flat battery event, an interrupted software update, or a poorly executed third-party remap. When the internal data becomes scrambled, the FRM3 stops communicating correctly with the vehicle's lighting, comfort, and body systems. You can end up with any combination of: no brake lights, inoperative xenon or LED headlights, non-functional windows, dead central locking, or a continuous fault loop through your OBD port. The module itself is often perfectly functional — the hardware is fine. It's the data that's the problem, and data can be repaired.
Why Is Posting Your FRM3 to Us Smarter Than Going to a Dealer?
A BMW main dealer's standard response to a failed FRM3 is to supply and fit a brand-new unit, then charge you for the coding session on top. You're looking at a significant bill for a problem that, in the majority of cases, requires a data-level fix rather than a hardware replacement. At The Vehicle Check, we've been working with BMW and Mini electronics for years, repairing FRM2 and FRM3 modules from E-series and R-series vehicles including the 1 Series (E81–E88), 3 Series (E90–E93), 5 Series (E60–E61), X1 (E84), Z4 (E89), and the full Mini R55 through R61 range. We know these modules inside out — literally. Our mail-in service means you're not paying dealership labour rates, not waiting weeks for a parts order, and not being told your only option is replacement.
Compare that with posting your unit to us: you're covered by our free return tracked shipping, you get a 3–5 working day turnaround, and we restore the original module to your vehicle's specific data profile. Your VIN-matched, mileage-matched, trim-matched module — repaired and returned.
How Do You Safely Package and Send Your FRM3 Module?
Packaging electronics correctly takes about five minutes and costs almost nothing — here's how to do it properly so your module arrives in the same condition it left you.
- Remove the module carefully. The FRM3 sits in the driver's footwell area. Disconnect the battery before removal, unplug the multi-pin connectors gently, and unscrew the retaining bracket. Don't yank the connectors — the pins are delicate.
- Wrap in anti-static protection first. If you have an anti-static bag, use it. If not, a sealed plastic food bag works as a basic moisture barrier. Don't wrap directly in standard household cling film.
- Add bubble wrap. At least two full layers around the unit. The connectors and housing edges are the vulnerable points.
- Use a rigid outer box. A shoebox or small cardboard postal box — not a padded envelope. The module needs to be immovable inside the box; fill gaps with scrunched newspaper or foam.
- Include a note inside the box with your full name, callback number, vehicle make, model, year, and a short description of what's happening. This helps us prioritise and gets your repair turned around faster.
- Send tracked. Royal Mail Tracked 48, DPD, or any tracked courier service. Keep your tracking reference until the module is back in your car and working.

What Happens to Your FRM3 Once It Arrives Here?
Every FRM3 that arrives at our Enfield workshop is logged in on the day it's received. We run a full diagnostic read of the module's current data state, identify exactly where the corruption exists, and carry out the repair using specialist equipment that allows us to rebuild the configuration data precisely to your vehicle's profile. We don't use generic blank modules or off-the-shelf data sets — your module is repaired to your car's specific coding. Once verified, the unit is tested, packaged securely, and returned to you via free tracked delivery. We'll drop you a message when it's on its way.
Turnaround is 3–5 working days from receipt in the vast majority of cases. If your module presents a more complex fault, we'll contact you before doing anything further.
Is This Service Available Across the Whole of the UK?
Absolutely. Our mail-in service is available nationwide — we've received modules from Cornwall to Caithness, Belfast to Bristol. If you're within roughly 60 miles of Enfield in North London, you're also welcome to drive in and have the work done while you wait or on the same day. For everyone else, the post works perfectly well and the result is identical. Find out more about how our mail-in repair process works if you'd like a full walkthrough before sending anything.
