FRM Footwell Module Repair – Post It to Us from Anywhere in the UK

Your BMW or Mini's lights have all died at once. The headlights, indicators, footwell lamps — gone. You've had it scanned and the technician is pointing at the FRM footwell module. Before you let a dealer charge you the best part of a grand for a new one, here's a better option: post the unit to us, and we'll fix the one you've already got.

At The Vehicle Check, FRM module repair is one of the most common jobs that lands on our bench. We're a UK automotive electronics specialist based in Enfield, and our mail-in service means drivers from Aberdeen to Penzance can access the same hands-on component-level repair without leaving their driveway. No middlemen, no inflated dealer margins — just a proper fix, posted back to you, fast.

Not near Enfield? No problem. Read on. If you are within about 60 miles, you're also welcome to book a drive-in appointment at our Enfield EN3 workshop instead.

What Is the FRM Footwell Module and Why Does It Fail?

The FRM (Footwell Module) is the central controller for your BMW or Mini's exterior and interior lighting systems — headlights, sidelights, indicators, hazard lights, footwell LEDs and more all run through it. When it fails, they typically all go down together, which is what makes the fault so unmistakable.

Failure is almost always caused by a voltage spike — commonly from jump-starting the vehicle incorrectly, or from a battery being disconnected and reconnected while the ignition was live. The spike hits the module's internal driver chips and burns them out. The module itself is not inherently fragile; it's just been put in a vulnerable position by a momentary wiring event.

The good news is that this kind of damage is entirely repairable at component level. We replace the damaged driver ICs and output transistors on the board itself, test under load, and return your original unit — with your original coding and EEPROM data intact.

How Does the Mail-In FRM Repair Service Work?

The process is genuinely straightforward — we've refined it over years of handling mail-in repairs for customers across the whole of the UK.

  1. Remove the module. The FRM is located in the driver's footwell area, typically behind a trim panel. On most BMW E-series models it's a 10-minute job with basic tools. We can talk you through it if needed.
  2. Package it safely (see tips below) and post it to us at: Office 13, 25 Mollison Avenue, Enfield, EN3 7LW.
  3. We diagnose and repair at component level — driver chips, output transistors, power regulation components — whatever the board needs.
  4. We test thoroughly under simulated load conditions before signing it off.
  5. We return it to you free of charge via tracked courier, usually within 3–5 working days of receiving it.

Include a note with your name, contact number, vehicle registration and a brief description of the fault. That's it. You'll hear from us once it's in, and again when it's heading back.

How Should I Package My FRM Module for Posting?

A little care with packaging goes a long way — electronics don't enjoy rattling around in a padded envelope.

  • Wrap the module in two or three layers of bubble wrap, covering all edges and corners.
  • Place it in a rigid cardboard box — a small to medium jiffy box is ideal. Don't use a padded envelope alone.
  • Fill any remaining space with scrunched paper or foam offcuts to stop the unit moving inside the box.
  • Seal every seam with packing tape, not just the top flap.
  • Clearly write or print our address label: The Vehicle Check, Office 13, 25 Mollison Avenue, Enfield, EN3 7LW.
  • Use a tracked and signed-for service — Royal Mail Tracked 48 or a next-day courier such as DPD or Evri. Keep your receipt and tracking number.

If in doubt, imagine the parcel being dropped from waist height onto concrete. If the module would survive that, you've packaged it well enough.

Why Does Mail-In Beat Going to a BMW Dealer for This?

Dealers don't repair FRM modules — they replace them. That means you're buying a new unit (or a remanufactured one from their supply chain), paying for it to be coded to your car, and spending money on labour for the full removal and refitment. The bill regularly lands between £400 and £900 depending on the dealer and your exact model.

Our repair costs a fraction of that. More importantly, because we fix your module — the one that's already married to your car's systems — you avoid the re-coding process entirely in most cases. Plug it back in and you're done.

We also repair a wide range of related modules if you have other fault codes alongside the FRM issue. Our ABS module repair service and ECU repair service are available via the same mail-in process — so if your scan throws up multiple faults, we can often handle them together.

Why Trust The Vehicle Check With Your FRM Module?

We're not a general auto-electrician who occasionally looks at electronics. Automotive control modules are all we do. The Vehicle Check has been repairing BMW and Mini FRM units, ECUs, ABS modules, DSG mechatronics and a broad range of other automotive electronics for well over a decade. We work on these boards at component level — with proper rework stations, oscilloscopes and manufacturer wiring data — not with generic swap-out replacements.

Our engineers have hands-on experience with failure modes across BMW E-series platforms and Mini R-series production years from 2004 through to 2026. When your FRM arrives, we know what we're looking for before we've even powered it up, because we've seen this failure pattern hundreds of times. That's not a boast — it's just the honest result of specialising in one discipline for a long time.

Customers post modules to us from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and every corner of England. The mail-in service exists precisely because good specialist repair shouldn't be limited to people who happen to live near a quality workshop.
