FRM Footwell Module Repair — Mail-In UK Service | The Vehicle Check
FRM Footwell Module Repair — Post It to Us from Anywhere in the UK
Your indicators have gone. Your brake lights are out. Maybe every exterior light on your BMW or Mini stopped working at once and a fault code is pointing squarely at the FRM. You don't need a main dealer quote that'll make your eyes water — you need someone who actually knows this module inside out. That's exactly what we do here at The Vehicle Check, and you can get your unit to us without leaving your driveway.
What Is an FRM Footwell Module and Why Does It Fail?
The FRM — Footwell Module — is the electronics brain behind your exterior lighting, interior cabin lights, door mirror folding, rain sensor inputs and central locking on BMW E and F series vehicles and several Mini models. It fails for a handful of well-documented reasons: voltage spikes caused by jump-starting with incorrect polarity, water ingress into the footwell area, and internal component fatigue on higher-mileage cars. The result is always inconvenient and often illegal to drive — no indicators, no brake lights, or a complete lighting blackout.
Because the FRM is programmed to your specific VIN, you can't simply swap in a second-hand unit from the breakers. It needs either reprogramming or, better still, proper repair of the original — which is precisely what our engineers carry out on every unit that comes through our workshop.
Why Is Mail-In FRM Repair a Better Option Than Going to a Dealer?
A BMW dealer will quote you for a brand-new FRM unit, the labour to fit it, and then coding time on top — easily pushing you past £600–£900 for what is fundamentally an electronic component failure. Our mail-in repair service fixes your existing module, meaning no new coding is required on refit in the vast majority of cases, and the cost is a fraction of a dealer replacement. You also avoid the hassle of booking a courtesy car, waiting weeks for a parts order, and sitting in a dealership waiting room for half a day.
Our nationwide mail-in repair service is designed specifically for this situation. You remove the unit, post it to us, we repair it, and we send it back — ready to refit. Simple, fast, and transparent on price before you commit.

How Do You Package and Send Your FRM Module Safely?
Sending an electronic module through the post sounds daunting, but it's straightforward if you follow a few basic rules. Here's exactly how we recommend doing it:
- Remove the FRM from the vehicle. It's typically located beneath the dashboard on the driver's side footwell area, clipped to a bracket. Disconnect the connectors carefully and remove any mounting screws.
- Wrap in anti-static bubble wrap. Standard bubble wrap is fine, but if you have an anti-static bag (the type components often arrive in), use that as a first layer. Electronics don't love static discharge.
- Place in a rigid cardboard box. Don't use a padded envelope — the module needs rigid protection. Fill any void space with scrunched paper or foam so it can't shift during transit.
- Include a note with your details. Write your full name, contact phone number, vehicle registration, and a brief description of the fault. This speeds up our diagnostic process considerably.
- Send via a tracked service. We strongly recommend Royal Mail Special Delivery (Next Day) or a tracked courier such as DPD or Evri tracked. This gives you full insurance cover and a delivery confirmation.

What Happens to Your FRM Once It Arrives at Our Workshop?
The moment your module arrives, it's logged against your details and booked in for diagnostics. Our engineers perform a full electronic assessment of the FRM before any repair work begins — we identify the exact failed components rather than applying a blanket fix. Common findings include failed MOSFETs on the lighting output circuits, damaged processor pins caused by voltage spikes, and corrupted flash memory from a failed battery event. We replace failed components to OEM specification and retest the unit through a full functional cycle before it leaves the bench.
Turnaround is 3–5 working days from receipt, and return shipping is included in the price — no hidden extras. You'll receive a dispatch notification with tracking details so you know exactly when to expect your module back.
Why Does Repairing the Original FRM Beat Fitting a Second-Hand One?
It's a question we get asked regularly. Second-hand FRM units from breakers yards are cheap, but they come with a catch — they're coded to a different VIN. Getting a used FRM coded to your car requires dealer-level ISTA access or specialist equipment, and it's not always straightforward. There's also no way to know the fault history of a used unit; it may have the same underlying failure that caused it to be removed from a donor vehicle in the first place.
Repairing your original module means it goes back in with its VIN coding intact. No additional programming in most cases. Fit and forget. It's a cleaner, more reliable solution — and our engineers have been doing exactly this on BMW and Mini platforms for years. The same expertise that underpins our ECU repair service and our ABS module repair service is applied to every FRM unit on the bench.
Who Are The Vehicle Check and Why Trust Us With Your FRM?
The Vehicle Check is a UK automotive electronics specialist based in Enfield, north London, with a national mail-in customer base that spans every corner of the UK. We work exclusively on automotive electronics — ECUs, mechatronics, airbag modules, immobilisers, BCM and CEM units, DSG mechatronics, and footwell modules like the FRM. We don't do servicing, tyres or bodywork; electronics is our entire focus, which means the engineers touching your module have deep, specific experience with exactly this type of unit rather than a generalist background.
We've repaired FRM units from vehicles spanning a decade of BMW and Mini production, giving us a thorough understanding of the common failure modes at each build period and how to address them properly. If you're local to north London — within roughly 60 miles of Enfield — you're also welcome to drive in to our EN3 workshop. For everyone else, our mail-in service delivers the same standard of repair straight to your door.
