FRM Footwell Module Repair – Nationwide Mail-In Service
Half your car's electronics have gone quiet at once — headlights behaving oddly, windows refusing to move, central locking doing its own thing — and a fault code reader is pointing squarely at the FRM. That one small module under your driver's dash is having an outsized impact on your day, and the dealer quote has just made it worse. There is a better route: post it to us, and we'll have it fixed and back on your doorstep in days.
What Is the FRM Footwell Module and What Does It Actually Control?
The FRM — short for Footwell Module — is the central nervous system for a surprisingly large chunk of your BMW or Mini's body electronics. Sitting behind the driver's side lower dash trim, it manages exterior lighting (headlights, sidelights, indicators, fog lights), interior cabin lighting, electric windows, central locking, folding mirrors and even the horn on many models. Because it handles so many functions through a single unit, a failing FRM announces itself loudly: multiple systems fail together, apparently without reason, and ISTA or any capable OBD reader flags the module directly.
Affected models span a wide BMW and Mini range — 1 Series (E81, E82, E87, E88, F20, F21), 3 Series (E90, E91, E92, E93), 5 Series (E60, E61), X1 (E84), Z4 (E89), Mini R55, R56, R57, R58, R59 and others. If your vehicle is in that family and several of those functions have gone at once, the FRM is almost certainly responsible.
Why Does the FRM Footwell Module Fail?
The most common cause of FRM failure is voltage spike damage — typically triggered when the vehicle battery is disconnected or jumps flat while the module is mid-cycle, or when cheap aftermarket accessories back-feed voltage into the body electronics network. The FRM's internal processor and programme memory take the hit. The result is a corrupted or partially erased flash chip, leaving the module unable to run its routines correctly. In many cases, the hardware — the PCB, connectors and components — is completely intact; it is purely a software and data fault, which is exactly what we specialise in correcting.
Water ingress through a blocked door drain or a leaking windscreen can also damage the FRM's circuitry physically, and we assess for that too. If we find hardware damage, we tell you before doing anything — no surprises, no unexpected invoices.
How Does the Mail-In FRM Repair Process Work?
Posting your FRM to us is straightforward, and most owners manage the removal themselves with basic tools in under thirty minutes. Here is the full process:
- Remove the module. The FRM is located in the driver's footwell behind the lower dash trim panel, usually secured by a single trim clip and a wiring harness connector. Disconnect the battery first, remove the trim, unplug the harness and unclip the module.
- Package it safely. Wrap the module in at least two layers of bubble wrap — the connector tabs are the vulnerable points. Place it in a robust cardboard box with padding on all six sides. Do not use a padded envelope alone; a rigid box is essential for a PCB in transit.
- Use a tracked postal service. Royal Mail Tracked 48, DPD or similar. Address to: Office 13, 25 Mollison Avenue, Enfield, EN3 7LW. Include your name, contact number and a brief note of the symptoms you are experiencing.
- We diagnose and repair. On receipt, we run a full bench diagnosis, reflash or restore the module's firmware and data, and bench-test every function the FRM controls before it leaves our workshop.
- Returned within 3–5 working days. Your repaired FRM comes back via free tracked return postage, ready to plug straight back in. Original vehicle data is preserved throughout.
Why Does Our Mail-In Service Beat a Dealer Replacement?
BMW and Mini dealers charge between £400 and £900 to supply and programme a replacement FRM — and that is assuming the replacement is available off the shelf, which is increasingly not the case for older chassis modules. Third-party auto-electricians who work on FRMs typically charge £150 to £300 on the bench alone, then add return postage on top. Our all-in price starts from £89.99 and includes free return postage and a full repair warranty. There are no hidden extras. The module comes back with your original coding intact, so there is no additional dealer visit for programming in the vast majority of cases.
We are automotive electronics specialists, not a general garage taking on occasional module work. Our team has worked on BMW and Mini body electronics for well over a decade, repairing FRM units, BCM and CEM modules, ABS units, airbag modules and ECUs from across the full spectrum of European vehicles. That depth of experience means we have encountered the full range of FRM failure modes — and we know which ones are software fixes and which ones need honest conversation about hardware.
You can read more about how our postal repair service works on our mail-in repair page, or explore related services including ECU repair and cloning and ABS module repair — all available through the same nationwide postal process.
Is There a Warranty on the Repaired FRM Module?
Yes. Every FRM repair carried out at The Vehicle Check is covered by a full repair warranty. If the same fault returns, we will sort it — no arguments, no quibble. We stand behind the work because we only send units back when we are satisfied they have passed every bench test.
Can I Drive My Car Without the FRM Fitted?
In most cases, no — or certainly not safely. With the FRM absent or failed, headlights, indicators and other safety-critical lighting systems may not operate, making the vehicle unroadworthy. Plan to keep the car off the road during the repair window, or arrange for it to remain parked safely. The 3–5 day turnaround is designed to minimise that inconvenience as much as possible.
