Crash Data Reset Mail-In Service UK | The Vehicle Check

Crash Data Reset Mail-In Service — Post Your Airbag Module to Us from Anywhere in the UK
Your airbag light is on, the system won't arm, and a dealer has just quoted you three figures for a brand-new module. Before you hand over that cash, here's what they probably didn't mention: in the vast majority of cases, your existing airbag control module is completely salvageable. The crash data stored inside it just needs clearing by someone who knows what they're doing — and that's exactly what we do at The Vehicle Check, every single day.
Our nationwide crash data reset mail-in service lets you post your SRS/airbag module directly to our Enfield workshop, wherever in the UK you happen to be. We reset the locked crash data, test the module thoroughly, and send it straight back to you — fully repaired, free return included. No dealer appointment, no courtesy-car faff, no inflated parts prices.
What Is Crash Data and Why Does It Lock Your Airbag Module?
Crash data is fault information written permanently into your airbag control module (ACM) the moment the vehicle's sensors detect an impact significant enough to trigger — or nearly trigger — the airbag system. This data acts as a hard lock: once it's written, standard diagnostic software can read it but cannot clear it. The module stays in a locked, non-operational state and your dashboard SRS warning light stays on, regardless of how well the rest of the vehicle has been repaired.
This matters because an airbag module in a locked state will not deploy your airbags in a future accident. It's a genuine safety issue, not just a warning light to ignore. Resetting the crash data — properly, at hardware level — restores the module to its original working condition and returns your airbag system to full readiness.
It's worth noting that crash data can be written even by relatively minor impacts. Kerb strikes at speed, car park bumps that didn't deploy any bags, or low-speed rear-end shunts are all common culprits. The module doesn't know or care how serious the accident was — it stores the data regardless.
Why Does Our Mail-In Service Beat Going to a Dealer?
A franchised dealer typically has two options: plug in their diagnostic tool (which cannot clear crash data at firmware level), or order a new module from the manufacturer. A new OEM airbag module routinely costs £300–£800+ depending on the vehicle, and that's before fitting and coding. Aftermarket modules often need programming to the vehicle's VIN, which adds another layer of cost and complexity.
Our approach is different. We work at the hardware and firmware level — the same level at which crash data is written — so we can clear it cleanly and completely. Your original module is returned to you, still matched to your vehicle, with no need for recoding or VIN registration. The cost saving over a new dealer-supplied module is substantial, and the result is identical.
Beyond cost, our mail-in service removes every logistical headache. You don't need to drive to us (though if you're within about 60 miles of Enfield EN3, you're welcome to drop in). You don't need to book your car in or leave it anywhere. You remove the module, pack it up, post it, and we do the rest.

Which Vehicles Can Have Their Crash Data Reset?
We cover the overwhelming majority of makes and models on UK roads. Our workshop regularly handles crash data resets on Ford (Focus, Fiesta, Mondeo, Transit, Kuga), Vauxhall (Astra, Corsa, Insignia, Mokka), BMW (1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X5), Mercedes-Benz (A-Class, C-Class, E-Class, Sprinter), Audi (A3, A4, A6, Q5), Volkswagen (Golf, Polo, Passat, Tiguan), Renault, Peugeot, Citroën, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai, Seat, Škoda and many others.
If your make or model isn't on that list, call us on 0203 489 2610 before posting. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help.
How Do You Package Your Airbag Module for Safe Posting?
Airbag modules are solid-state electronic units — there are no fragile mechanical parts inside — so they're generally straightforward to post safely as long as you take a few sensible precautions:
- Disconnect the battery first. Before removing the module from your vehicle, disconnect your vehicle's battery and wait at least 10–15 minutes before handling any airbag components.
- Wrap in bubble wrap. Two or three layers of bubble wrap around the entire module gives it good protection against knocks in transit.
- Use a rigid outer box. A small cardboard box with the module centred and surrounded by packing material (crumpled paper or foam) is ideal. Avoid padded envelopes alone for heavier modules.
- Include your details. Pop a note inside with your full name, return address, vehicle make, model, year and registration, and a contact phone number. This helps us process your module quickly when it arrives.
- Use a tracked postal service. Royal Mail Special Delivery or a tracked courier service is strongly recommended. Keep your tracking reference until the module is back in your hands.
Send everything to: Office 13, 25 Mollison Avenue, Enfield, EN3 7LW.
What Is the Turnaround Time for a Crash Data Reset?
Our standard turnaround is 3–5 working days from the day your module arrives with us. We'll send you a confirmation when it lands, and another notification the moment it's been completed and dispatched back to you on free tracked return. For the majority of common modules we hold all the necessary equipment and software in-house, so delays are rare.
If your situation is time-sensitive — for instance, you need a vehicle back on the road for work — give us a ring on 0203 489 2610 and we'll do our best to accommodate you.
Is a Crash Data Reset the Same as an Airbag Module Repair?
Not always — but they're closely related. A crash data reset addresses the locked fault data written during an impact. In some cases, particularly after a more serious collision, the module may also have sustained internal component damage — failed capacitors, damaged microcontrollers or corrupted firmware — that requires a full component-level repair on top of the data reset.
When your module arrives, our technicians assess it fully. If it needs more than a straightforward data reset, we'll contact you to explain what's involved and confirm the cost before proceeding. We don't carry out work without your approval.
Our airbag module repair capability ties in closely with our broader ECU work — if you've got a vehicle with multiple electronic faults, our ECU repair service and ABS module repair service may also be relevant to your situation.
Why Trust The Vehicle Check with Your Airbag Module?
The Vehicle Check has been repairing automotive electronics at component level for well over a decade. Our technicians work exclusively on vehicle electronics — ACM and SRS modules, ECUs, ABS units, DSG mechatronics, BCM/CEM cloning, FRM footwell modules, immobilisers and more — which means crash data reset isn't an occasional side job for us. It's core business. We've worked on modules from nearly every mainstream manufacturer sold in the UK and have encountered the edge cases, the tricky variants and the modules that other repairers send back unfixed.
That focused specialism matters. When your airbag system is involved, you want the module back in the hands of someone who does this constantly, not someone who does it occasionally between servicing and MOT work.
