Crash Data Reset Mail-In Service UK | The Vehicle Check
Crash Data Reset — Post Your Module, Get It Back Ready to Refit
Your airbag light came on after an accident. The car won't start, or the dash is lit up like a Christmas tree. The module has locked itself — it's recorded the crash event, and now it's sitting there refusing to cooperate. That's crash data, and clearing it is exactly what we do, every single day, for customers all over the UK — without them ever needing to leave their driveway.
What Is Crash Data and Why Does It Stop Your Airbag System Working?
Crash data is fault information permanently written to your SRS airbag control module the moment your vehicle detects a significant impact. Even if no airbags actually deployed — a minor shunt, a kerb strike, a car wash mishap with aggressive sensors — the module can lock itself and store hard fault codes that standard diagnostic tools simply cannot erase. The airbag warning light stays on, the system is disabled, and in some cases the vehicle immobilises or the dash stays dead. The only fix is a proper crash data reset performed at the module level, using specialist equipment that talks directly to the processor inside the unit.
At The Vehicle Check, we use professional bench-level programming tools to read, clear, and verify your module's memory. We cover hard crash data, soft crash data, and deployment data — and we'll tell you honestly if a module is beyond recovery before you've spent a penny on return postage.
How Does the Mail-In Crash Data Reset Service Work?
The process is genuinely straightforward — we've designed it that way on purpose, because the last thing you need when your car is off the road is a complicated procedure to follow.
- Remove your SRS airbag module. It's usually located under the centre console, beneath the driver's seat, or behind the glovebox depending on your vehicle. Your vehicle's workshop manual or a quick online search for your specific model will show you the exact location. Disconnect the battery for at least 20 minutes before touching any airbag components.
- Package it carefully (see our packaging tips below) and post it to us at Office 13, 25 Mollison Avenue, Enfield, EN3 7LW.
- We assess, reset, and test. Once your module arrives, our technicians carry out a full diagnostic read, perform the crash data reset, and verify the module is functioning correctly before it leaves our workshop.
- We return it free of charge. We cover return delivery on every mail-in job — no hidden extras.
- Refit and drive. Your module goes back in exactly as it came out. Reconnect the battery, start the car, and the airbag light should be gone.

How Should You Package Your Airbag Module for Posting?
Packaging it properly takes about five minutes and protects a component that could cost several hundred pounds to replace if it arrives damaged. Here's what we recommend:
- Wrap the module in two layers of bubble wrap, paying particular attention to the connector pins — bent pins can make a module unreadable.
- Place it inside a rigid cardboard box with at least 3–4 cm of padding on all sides. A shoe box with scrunched newspaper works well if you don't have purpose-made packaging foam.
- Seal the box thoroughly with parcel tape — don't rely on the box flaps alone.
- Write your name, contact number, vehicle registration, and a brief description of the fault on a piece of paper inside the box. This speeds up processing significantly.
- Use a tracked, signed-for service. Royal Mail Tracked 48 or a courier service like DPD or Evri gives you proof of delivery and peace of mind.
Why Is the Mail-In Service Better Than Going to a Dealer?
Dealers have one solution for a locked airbag module: replace it. A new OEM module, programmed to your vehicle, typically costs between £400 and £1,200 depending on make and model — and that's before labour. Some manufacturers require the new module to be programmed online via their own network, adding time and further cost.
Our crash data reset recovers your existing module. Same unit, same calibration, same vehicle history — cleared and restored for a fraction of the replacement price. No waiting for parts. No dealer booking slots stretching three weeks into the future. No unnecessary component waste.
There's also the question of expertise. Dealers service everything. We specialise exclusively in automotive electronics. Our team works on airbag modules, ECUs, ABS units, and related systems day in, day out — it's all we do. If you want to understand more about how that specialist approach applies to other control units, take a look at our ECU repair service for context.
Which Vehicles Do You Cover for Crash Data Reset?
We cover the vast majority of passenger cars, light commercials, and SUVs sold in the UK market. Our team has hands-on experience with modules from Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Ford, Vauxhall, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Renault, Peugeot, Citroën, Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar, SEAT, Škoda, Fiat, Hyundai, and Kia — across model years from the early 2000s through to 2026. If your vehicle isn't listed, call us on 0203 489 2610 and we'll give you a straight answer.
What About ABS Modules — Do You Handle Those Too?
Absolutely. Crash events can affect more than just the SRS module — your ABS control unit can also store fault data following an accident, causing ABS and stability control warning lights to persist. Our ABS module repair service runs on the same mail-in model, and if you need both units addressed we can handle them together in a single turnaround — just include both modules in the same parcel and note it clearly on your information sheet.
A Note on Our Experience
The Vehicle Check has been repairing automotive electronics for over a decade, working on thousands of SRS airbag modules, ECUs, and body control units from virtually every major manufacturer. Our Enfield workshop uses the same bench-level programming and reading equipment used by main dealer technical centres — the difference is we apply that capability to repair rather than replacement, and we do it at a price that makes sense for real people with real budgets. We're not a parts-swapping operation. We diagnose, we fix, and we stand behind our work.
