BMW FRM3 Footwell Module Repair — Mail-In UK Service | The Vehicle Check

BMW FRM3 Footwell Module Repair — Send It, We Fix It, We Send It Back
Your BMW's lights have gone. Wipers won't respond. Windows are stuck halfway and the horn's given up the ghost. That's a failed FRM3 footwell module — one of the most well-documented fault points across the E-series and F-series BMW range, and something our engineers at The Vehicle Check have been stripping, diagnosing and repairing day in, day out. No dealer required. No eye-watering main-agent invoice. Just post it to us, and we'll have it back on your doorstep within 3–5 working days.
Our nationwide mail-in repair service means it doesn't matter whether you're in Edinburgh, Exeter, Belfast or Bristol. If you can put it in a box, we can fix it.
What Does the BMW FRM3 Actually Do — and Why Does It Fail?
The FRM3 (Footwell Module 3) is the brain behind a surprising number of systems on BMW 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X1, X3, Z4 and Mini models built roughly between 2007 and 2014. It manages exterior lighting — including adaptive xenon headlights — windscreen wipers, electric window regulators, central locking outputs and the horn relay. When it goes wrong, it tends to take several of those systems down at once, which is how many drivers first realise something's badly up.
The most common cause of failure is moisture ingress. The module sits low in the driver's footwell, making it vulnerable to water from a leaking windscreen, blocked pollen filter drain or a wet carpet. Once moisture reaches the PCB, corrosion attacks the solder joints and processor connections, triggering fault codes like A806F (FRM voltage supply), A806E (FRM internal error) or simply a cascade of lighting and body control faults with no obvious single cause.
A second common failure mode — particularly on vehicles that have had a flat battery or a jump-start gone wrong — is flash memory corruption inside the module's microcontroller. The FRM3 is sensitive to voltage spikes during programming cycles, and a botched DIY reset attempt or a poorly managed battery change can brick the module entirely.
Both failure types are repairable. We've seen hundreds of them.
Why Does Mail-In Repair Beat Going to a BMW Dealer?
The dealer route for a failed FRM3 almost always means a brand-new unit — currently priced anywhere from £400 to over £700 for the part alone, plus fitting and coding time billed at main-agent labour rates. That's before you factor in the wait for parts and the need to book your car in, sometimes weeks away.
Our repair costs a fraction of that. We rebuild your existing module, retain your original VIN coding where possible, and return it ready to plug back in. You're not paying for a new part you don't need. You're paying for expertise applied to the part you already have.
Mail-in also suits the reality of a car with a failed FRM3 — it's often undriveable or legally off the road due to non-functioning lights. You don't need to arrange recovery to a workshop. You remove the module yourself (a straightforward job on most affected BMWs — we'll walk you through it if needed), pack it up, and post it. Simple.
For anything else your BMW's electronics might need, our ECU repair service and ABS module repair service follow the same mail-in process — one trusted workshop, multiple solutions.
How Does the BMW FRM3 Mail-In Repair Process Work?
The process is straightforward and we've refined it so there's no confusion at any stage.
- Contact us first. Call us on 0203 489 2610 or use our contact page to describe your symptoms and confirm your BMW model and year. We'll confirm the repair is suitable and give you a fixed price upfront — no hidden extras.
- Remove and pack your module. The FRM3 is located behind the lower dash trim on the driver's side. Removal typically takes 15–30 minutes with basic tools. Full packing guidance is below.
- Post it to us. Send your module to: Office 13, 25 Mollison Avenue, Enfield, EN3 7LW. We recommend Royal Mail Special Delivery or a tracked courier — never untracked post for any electronic component.
- We diagnose and repair. Our electronics engineers assess the board under magnification, identify the specific failure mode, rework or replace affected components, and test the module thoroughly before signing it off.
- We return it to you. Free tracked return delivery is included. Most modules are back with their owners within 3–5 working days of arriving with us.
You can find full details of how our mail-in service works on our mail-in repair page.
How Should You Package Your FRM3 Module for Posting?
Packaging an automotive ECU or control module correctly takes two minutes and prevents damage in transit — follow these steps and your module will arrive with us in the same condition it left your car.
- Wrap in anti-static bubble wrap. Standard bubble wrap is fine if anti-static isn't available, but avoid wrapping directly in loose plastic bags — static discharge is a real risk for sensitive electronics.
- Use a rigid box. A small cardboard box with at least 2–3cm of padding on all sides. If the module moves around inside when you shake the box, add more packing material.
- Include a note inside. Write your name, phone number, vehicle details (make, model, year, engine) and a brief description of the fault. This speeds up our diagnosis and ensures your module doesn't get mixed up.
- Don't send connectors or wiring looms. The module body only — there's no need to send the plugs or any wiring.
- Use tracked postage. Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed is our recommendation. Keep your proof of postage until the repair is complete.

Why Trust The Vehicle Check With Your FRM3?
The Vehicle Check is an independent automotive electronics specialist based in Enfield, North London. Our engineers have worked on automotive control modules across virtually every mainstream manufacturer — BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen Group, Ford, Vauxhall, Audi, Porsche and more — for well over a decade. FRM footwell modules, in all three generations, are one of our most frequently repaired units. We have the dedicated equipment to read, rework and verify these boards at component level, not just swap parts and hope for the best.
Beyond FRM repair, our workshop handles ECU cloning and repair, ABS module rebuilds, DSG mechatronic overhaul, crash data reset, airbag module repair and BCM/CEM cloning — all from the same Enfield address, all available by post to customers anywhere in the UK. If you're within 60 miles of EN3, you're also welcome to drive in.
We don't pretend a repair is possible when it isn't. If your FRM3 is beyond economic repair — which is rare but does happen — we'll tell you before we charge you a penny for the work.
