BMW FRM3 Footwell Module Repair — Nationwide Mail-In Service

Your headlights go out. Your wipers stop mid-sweep. The indicators pack in and half your dashboard lights up like a Christmas tree. If you drive a BMW from the E-series generation, there's a very good chance one small unit sitting low in the footwell is responsible for all of it — the FRM3 footwell module. At The Vehicle Check, we repair them every week, for drivers across the whole of the UK, without you needing to set foot near a dealer.

What Does the BMW FRM3 Footwell Module Actually Do?

The FRM3 is the central switching brain for a large portion of your BMW's electrical body functions — and when it fails, those functions fail with it. It controls exterior lighting including headlights, sidelights, indicators and fog lights. It manages the interior lighting, the wipers, rain sensor, and in many configurations, the electric windows and convertible roof too. Because it sits in the footwell area and is exposed to moisture — often from a leaking windscreen seal, sunroof drain or condensation — corrosion on the internal PCB is the most common cause of failure. The failure mode is rarely gradual. Most owners describe a sudden cascade: multiple systems going down together with no obvious trigger.

The module itself stores vehicle-specific coding. That's why a straight swap from a breaker's unit rarely works — a replacement FRM3 from another car needs to be coded to your VIN, which means dealer software, dealer time and dealer prices. Repairing your original unit sidesteps all of that.

Which BMW Models and Years Does This Repair Cover?

Our FRM3 repair service covers the full range of affected E-series BMWs. If your car is listed below, the odds are high we've already repaired a module from the same build:

  • BMW 1 Series — E87 (2004–2011)
  • BMW 3 Series — E90 Saloon, E91 Touring, E92 Coupé, E93 Convertible (2005–2012)
  • BMW 5 Series — E60 Saloon, E61 Touring (2003–2010)
  • BMW 6 Series — E63 Coupé, E64 Convertible (2003–2010)
  • BMW X5 — E70 (2006–2013)
  • BMW X6 — E71 (2008–2014)

Not sure whether your unit is an FRM2 or FRM3? The part number on the module casing will confirm it — or just ring us on 0203 489 2610 and we'll check it with you before you post anything.

Why Does Mail-In Repair Beat Going to a BMW Dealer?

Honestly, it's not even close on value — and in most cases it's faster too. Here's how the two options compare in the real world in 2026:

Factor BMW Main Dealer TVC Mail-In Repair
Cost £400–£800+ (new unit + coding) Fixed repair price — fraction of dealer cost
Coding after repair Required — additional charge Not required — original unit retained
Turnaround Days to weeks (parts ordering) 3–5 working days
Return shipping You collect Free tracked return included
Need to be local Yes No — anywhere in the UK

The other point worth making: dealers replace, they don't typically repair. You get a unit from their parts shelf, coded to your car at an hourly rate. We repair the actual unit that's already coded to your specific VIN. It goes back in, and it works.

How Do You Send Your BMW FRM3 Module Safely by Post?

Packaging an FRM3 correctly takes two minutes and a bit of bubble wrap — here's exactly what we recommend so your module arrives safely:

  1. Remove the module carefully. The FRM3 sits in the driver's footwell behind a trim panel. Disconnect the battery first, wait two minutes, then unplug the connectors. Four bolts or screws typically hold it in place. Take a photo of the connector arrangement before you unplug.
  2. Wrap in anti-static bubble wrap. Standard bubble wrap is fine — anti-static (pink) is better. Wrap the unit at least two layers deep, paying attention to the connector pins.
  3. Double-box it. Place the wrapped unit inside a small box with padding around all sides, then place that box inside a larger outer box. This protects against courier compression damage.
  4. Label the outer box clearly. Address it to: The Vehicle Check, Office 13, 25 Mollison Avenue, Enfield, EN3 7LW. Include a note inside with your name, phone number, vehicle registration and a brief description of the fault.
  5. Send tracked and signed-for. Royal Mail Special Delivery or a tracked 24-hour courier service. Keep your tracking number.

If you're in any doubt about removing the module yourself, give us a call first — we're happy to talk you through it. Alternatively, if you're within 60 miles of Enfield, you're welcome to drive in to our EN3 site and drop the car off in person.

What Happens After Your FRM3 Arrives at TVC?

From the moment your module lands with us, the process is straightforward and fully communicated. We inspect and test the unit on arrival, identify the fault — whether that's moisture ingress, corroded solder joints, a failed component or a damaged microcontroller — and carry out the repair. We then test the repaired module on our bench equipment before packing and returning it. You'll typically have it back within 3–5 working days of it arriving with us, sent back via free tracked return delivery.

If for any reason a module is beyond economical repair — which is rare but does happen — we'll tell you straight away and discuss your options before any work goes ahead. No surprises on the bill.

Why Trust The Vehicle Check With Your BMW Electronics?

The Vehicle Check has been repairing automotive electronics for over a decade, working across the full spectrum of European, Asian and domestic vehicle makes — BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen Group, Ford, Vauxhall, Land Rover and beyond. FRM2 and FRM3 modules from E-series BMWs are among the most common units we see in the workshop, which means our engineers have built up hands-on pattern knowledge of every failure mode these units produce. We don't rely on guesswork or generic component swaps — we diagnose the actual fault and repair it properly. Our service sits alongside a full range of automotive electronics work including ECU repair and cloning, ABS module repair, and a full mail-in repair service covering dozens of modules and vehicle systems. All work is carried out at our Enfield workshop — not outsourced, not sent abroad.
