BMW E90 E91 E92 Transmission Module Repair | The Vehicle Check
The BMW E90, E91 and E92 3 Series fitted with the ZF 6HP automatic gearbox is one of the most common BMW models we see for transmission module faults. The EGS (Electronic Gearbox System) transmission control module on the E90 series develops specific failure modes — limp mode limited to third gear, harsh shifting after a cold start, no drive in any gear and loss of adaptation data. The Vehicle Check repairs BMW E90 series ZF transmission modules at component level.
E90 3 Series ZF Transmission Fault Codes
Common fault codes on the E90 ZF 6HP include: P0700 (TCM malfunction), P0751, P0752 (shift solenoid A performance), P0750, P0755, P0760 (solenoid circuit faults), 4F81 (SMG pressure limit exceeded) and EGS module communication fault codes.
Limp mode on the E90 typically locks the gearbox in third gear — the vehicle can move but cannot upshift or downshift. This is a protective measure triggered by the TCM detecting abnormal gearbox behaviour.
Component-Level ZF TCM Repair for E90
We bench test the E90 ZF TCM, identify the specific failed component at board level — solenoid driver, power supply IC or memory fault — and repair it. Where the TCM memory has been corrupted we carry out data recovery and re-flash as part of the repair.
Where a replacement TCM is required, we clone the original adaptation data to the new unit, avoiding a full dealer adaptation drive cycle.
