No Drive — Fault Repair

BMW E90 in limp mode, no drive, or a harsh gearbox that's lost its sharpness? The DCT mechatronic is the most likely cause — and it's repairable without the eye-watering dealer replacement quote.

The BMW E90 DCT — What Fails and Why It's Repairable

The E90 335i and M3 dual clutch transmission — known as the BMW DCT or DKG — uses a mechatronic unit containing solenoids, pressure sensors and hydraulic valve body all integrated into a single assembly. When any of these components fails, the result is typically limp mode, no drive in one direction, or harsh and unpredictable gear changes.

BMW dealers quote for a full mechatronic replacement or a complete gearbox exchange — both extremely expensive options. We strip the mechatronic, test each solenoid and pressure sensor individually and repair the specific failed component. The unit is bench tested before return and comes with a 12-month written warranty.

No Drive — Forward or Reverse

Complete loss of drive in one or both directions usually indicates a failed pressure solenoid or clutch engagement solenoid — repairable at component level.

DCT Limp Mode

The gearbox defaults to a safe mode when the mechatronic detects an internal fault. We identify and repair the specific trigger rather than simply resetting it.

Harsh or Jerky Shifts

Loss of the DCT's characteristic smooth engagement, replaced by jarring shifts, indicates valve body or solenoid wear inside the mechatronic.

Transmission Fault Codes

Codes 4B13, 4B14 and related transmission codes on the E90 point directly to mechatronic solenoid failures. We repair the cause, not just clear the code.

E90 DCT Questions

Does the gearbox need coding after repair?

A gearbox adaptation reset is recommended after refitting — a BMW-compatible OBD tool handles this. We advise on the procedure when we return the unit.

Do you cover the E92 and E93 as well?

Yes — the DCT fitted to the E92 coupe and E93 convertible is the same unit and is fully covered by our repair service.
