Airbag Crash Data Reset by Post — Nationwide Mail-In Service

Your airbag warning light is on. Your SRS system is locked out. And a dealer has just quoted you more than the car is practically worth. Sound familiar? There's a better way — post your airbag module to us, and we'll have it reset and back through your letterbox before you've even booked a dealer appointment.

What Is Airbag Crash Data, and Why Does It Lock Your SRS System?

Crash data is a set of fault records written permanently into your airbag control module the moment an impact is detected — even a minor collision that didn't deploy any airbags. Once stored, that data locks the entire SRS system, triggering the airbag warning light and preventing the system from functioning again. Standard diagnostic tools can read these codes, but they cannot erase them — the data is written at chip level. The only way to restore normal operation is to have the module reprogrammed at the hardware layer, which is exactly what we do here at The Vehicle Check.

It's worth being clear: this isn't a code-clear you can do with an OBD dongle from a motorway service station. It requires specialist automotive electronics equipment and the know-how to use it correctly — the kind of experience our team has built up over more than a decade working on modules from hundreds of different platforms.

How Does the Mail-In Airbag Reset Service Work?

The process is straightforward and designed to be as hassle-free as possible, wherever you are in the UK.

  1. Get in touch first. Give us a ring on 0203 489 2610 or drop us a message via our contact page. Tell us your vehicle make, model, year and the fault codes you've had read if you have them. We'll confirm compatibility and give you a fixed price — no surprises.
  2. Remove and package your module. Your airbag control module is typically located under the centre console, under a seat or behind the dashboard. Disconnect the battery first and wait at least 15 minutes before disconnecting the module connectors. Detailed removal guides are available for most vehicles online, or we're happy to talk you through it.
  3. Send it to us. Package the module securely and post it to: Office 13, 25 Mollison Avenue, Enfield, EN3 7LW. Use a tracked service — Royal Mail Tracked 48 or any courier works fine.
  4. We do the work. Once your module lands with us, we read the stored crash data, clear it at chip level, verify all hard fault codes are gone, and carry out a final function check before it leaves us.
  5. We send it back — free. Your reset module is returned via tracked courier at no extra charge, typically within 3–5 working days of arrival.

If you happen to be within 60 miles of Enfield EN3, you're also welcome to drive in — but for most of our customers across the UK, mail-in is the most practical and cost-effective option.

How Should I Package My Airbag Module for Posting?

Packaging your module correctly protects it in transit and ensures we can get started the moment it arrives. Here's what we recommend:

  • Wrap the module in several layers of bubble wrap — pay particular attention to the connector pins, which can bend if knocked.
  • Place the wrapped module inside a sturdy cardboard box with at least 3–4 cm of padding material (bubble wrap, foam or crumpled paper) on all sides.
  • Avoid plastic bags or thin envelopes — these offer no protection against the inevitable bumps of courier transit.
  • Include a note inside with your name, phone number, vehicle details and a brief description of the fault (e.g. "airbag light on after minor collision, codes: B0001, B0002").
  • Use a tracked posting service so you can confirm delivery — Royal Mail Tracked 48 is perfectly adequate for most modules.

Why Does Mail-In Beat a Dealer for Airbag Crash Data Reset?

It comes down to four things: cost, speed, flexibility, and expertise.

Cost: Main dealers almost universally replace airbag modules rather than repair them. A new OEM module can run anywhere from £200 to over £1,000 depending on the vehicle, plus fitting, plus programming. Our reset service costs a fraction of that, and your original module goes straight back in.

Speed: Booking a dealer diagnostic appointment in 2026, waiting for parts, then booking again for fitting can take weeks. Our 3–5 day mail-in turnaround is hard to beat.

Flexibility: You post to us from anywhere in the UK. You don't need to arrange recovery, find a local specialist, or take time off work to sit in a waiting room.

Expertise: This is what we do, day in, day out. The Vehicle Check has been repairing automotive electronics modules — airbag units, ECUs, ABS modules, DSG mechatronics and more — for over a decade. We've worked on modules from Ford, Vauxhall, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Land Rover, Volvo, Toyota, Nissan, Renault, Peugeot, Citroën, Seat, Skoda, Hyundai, Kia and a great many others. That breadth of experience means we've almost certainly seen your exact module before.

If your car has other electronics issues alongside the airbag fault, it's worth knowing we handle a full range of repairs. Take a look at our ECU repair service, our ABS module repair, and our full mail-in repair overview to see everything we can do by post.

Which Vehicles Can You Reset Airbag Crash Data For?

We cover the vast majority of cars, vans and light commercials sold in the UK. Common platforms we work with include Ford (Fiesta, Focus, Transit), Vauxhall (Corsa, Astra, Vivaro), BMW (1 Series through 7 Series, X-series), Mercedes-Benz (A-Class through S-Class, Sprinter), Audi (A1–A8, Q-range), Volkswagen (Golf, Polo, Passat, Caddy), Toyota (Yaris, Corolla, RAV4), Nissan (Micra, Juke, Qashqai), Land Rover (Defender, Discovery, Range Rover), Volvo (V40–V90, XC-range) and many more. If your vehicle isn't listed here, just call us on 0203 489 2610 — the chances are we can still help.

What Happens If My Module Is Beyond a Reset?

Occasionally a module has sustained physical damage in a severe impact and cannot be reliably restored by a data reset alone. If that's the case, we'll tell you straight — no charge for the diagnosis, and we'll discuss your options honestly. In some situations a full module repair or a like-for-like replacement with coding to your vehicle is possible. We'd rather give you the right answer than take your money for a job that won't hold.
