Peugeot BSI Reboot & Battery Reset Procedure

Peugeot BSI Reboot & Battery Reset Procedure

Professional How-To Guide by The Vehicle Check — thevehiclecheck.co.uk

Modern Peugeot vehicles use a central electronic module called the BSI (Body Systems Interface). This module manages central locking, interior and exterior lights, immobiliser functions, dashboard and odometer operation, and communication between various ECUs.

Because the BSI behaves like a computer, it must be restarted carefully. Incorrect battery disconnection, jump-starting, or key programming can cause software corruption. Following the correct reboot procedure helps restore normal operation and avoids faults.

Part 1: Key Programming & BSI Initialisation Procedure

Use this procedure after key programming or whenever the BSI requires a controlled reset.

Step 1 – Prepare the vehicle: Open the bonnet and lower the driver’s window (important in case central locking activates). Switch off all electrical equipment, remove the ignition key, and ensure all doors are closed.

Step 2 – Let the BSI sleep: Wait three minutes without touching the vehicle. Avoid opening doors, pressing the remote, operating switches, or connecting diagnostic tools.

Step 3 – Disconnect the battery: Remove the battery connection and wait 15 seconds.

Step 4 – Reconnect the battery: Reconnect and wait 10 seconds without touching the vehicle.

Step 5 – Wake the BSI safely: Through the open driver’s window, turn on the side/parking lights.

Step 6 – Turn on ignition: Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine. Check that the dashboard lights, radio, and other systems behave normally.

Step 7 – Re-synchronise the remote key: Press and hold the lock button on the key for 10 seconds.

Step 8 – Final checks: Remove the key, open and close a door, test the remote central locking, start the engine, and verify that all systems operate correctly.

Part 2: Safe Battery Disconnection Procedure

Why it matters: The BSI needs around 180 seconds of inactivity to enter sleep mode. Disconnecting the battery before this can cause immobiliser faults, central locking issues, lighting anomalies, or dashboard malfunctions.

Steps: Turn off all electrical items, lower the driver’s window, ensure doors are closed, remove the ignition key, disconnect any diagnostic tools, wait three minutes without touching the vehicle, then disconnect the battery.

Part 3: Safe Battery Reconnection (“Soft Reboot”)

Steps: Ensure all doors are closed and the driver’s window is open. Remove the ignition key and reconnect the battery. Wait 10 seconds without touching the vehicle. Through the open window, turn on the headlights to gently wake the BSI. Turn the ignition to ON, then start the engine. Verify that central locking, interior lights, indicators, dashboard, and immobiliser all operate correctly.

Important Warning: If any BSI-controlled system (interior lights, radio, indicators, etc.) activates during reconnection, the BSI may fail to initialise properly. Persistent faults may require a professional diagnostic reset.
