Erratic or Delayed Gear Changes
One of the first things drivers notice is that gear changes no longer feel predictable. The car might hold a gear far too long before shifting, or change up too early under acceleration. In some cases, the gearbox hunts back and forth between gears — a particularly unsettling feeling at motorway speeds.
Limp Mode
Limp mode — also called 'limp home mode' — is a protective state that modern vehicles enter when the electronic management systems detect a serious fault. In limp mode, the gearbox typically locks into a single gear (often third) and engine output is reduced. The car is technically still driveable, but only just. This is your car protecting itself while telling you very clearly that something needs attention.
Gearbox Warning Light
A gearbox warning light on the dashboard — sometimes shown as a gear symbol, sometimes as a spanner — is the TCM's way of flagging that it has detected a fault it cannot resolve on its own. In many cases, however, the gearbox is completely sound. The problem lies in the signals being sent to it. A faulty TCM gives the gearbox incorrect instructions — and the gearbox responds accordingly. Fix the TCM, and the gearbox behaviour returns to normal.
