Why Does Summer Heat Make Car Electrics Worse?
Your car's electronics are engineered to handle a range of temperatures, but sustained underbonnet heat — which can easily hit 90°C to 110°C near certain modules — does two things that cause real damage over time. First, it accelerates the degradation of solder joints on circuit boards. Those joints expand and contract with every heat cycle, and eventually they develop microscopic cracks that only open up under load or warmth. Second, it dries out electrolytic capacitors inside control modules, reducing their ability to smooth voltage and causing erratic behaviour.
The result? A fault that was completely invisible in February starts triggering warning lights in June. Your local garage plugs in a code reader, finds a code, clears it, and charges you sixty quid — and the light comes back a week later because the underlying hardware hasn't been touched. What does it look like on your dashboard?
Random misfires, an engine management light that appears in warm weather and vanishes overnight, poor throttle response on hot days, or a car that starts fine from cold but struggles after a short stop. These are classic signs of an ECU that's cracking under thermal load.
What's actually happening inside the ECU?
The processor and associated driver circuits on the ECU board are connected via solder joints to a multi-layer PCB. Over years of heat cycling, those joints develop what engineers call cold solder fatigue cracks — they look fine under normal inspection but open up electrically when the board reaches operating temperature. At that point the ECU loses communication with one or more sensors intermittently, throwing codes that seem random because they genuinely are: the fault is positional, not logical.

What does it look like?
ABS warning light, traction control light, or both illuminated together. Your brakes feel normal in everyday use, so you ignore it. But an active ABS fault means the system won't intervene in an emergency stop — and that's an MOT failure waiting to happen.
Why does summer make it worse?
ABS modules are typically mounted low on the engine bay or near the bulkhead, making them exposed to road spray and moisture throughout winter and spring. What's the actual cause?
Modern vehicles with start-stop use an AGM or EFB battery paired with a Battery Management System (BMS) or Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) that tracks charge state, internal resistance, and temperature in real time. Summer heat causes battery internal resistance to shift faster than the BMS's stored calibration values expect. The system reads the battery as degraded and disables start-stop as a protective measure — even if the battery itself is still serviceable.
The fix isn't always a new battery. Sometimes it's a BMS recalibration using OEM-level diagnostic software. Other times the IBS sensor itself has drifted or failed. Either way, your local tyre shop guessing the battery needs replacing and fitting a standard calcium battery without recalibrating the BMS will make things worse — some vehicles will actively overcharge the new battery and shorten its life within months.
Fault 4: Instrument Cluster Solder Failures — When Your Speedo or Fuel Gauge Starts Lying to You
What does it look like?
Speedometer needle dropping to zero at speed, fuel gauge reading full then empty, warning lights appearing that have no corresponding fault, or the entire cluster going dark for a second before recovering. On Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, and Vauxhall models in particular, this is a well-documented heat-related pattern.
Why the summer link?
Instrument clusters sit directly behind the dashboard, which acts as a heat trap on sunny days. The internal stepper motors that drive the gauges, and the solder joints connecting the display driver ICs, are both vulnerable to the same thermal fatigue described above. The specific failure mode we see most often is a cracked joint on the voltage regulator that powers the stepper motor array — the gauge works when the board is cool, fails when it warms up, and appears to recover when you park and let it cool down. Fault 5: AC Compressor Control Module Failure — The One That Ruins Summer Before It Starts
What does it look like?
Air conditioning that blows cold for ten minutes then switches to warm. AC that works perfectly when first turned on but cuts out once the engine reaches normal operating temperature. Or an AC system that simply won't engage at all despite the refrigerant level being confirmed as correct.
Why isn't it the gas?
Because everyone assumes it's the gas, gets a regas, and then wonders why the problem is still there two weeks later. The AC compressor on most modern vehicles isn't mechanically engaged directly — it's controlled by the BCM (Body Control Module) or a dedicated AC control module that manages the compressor clutch relay based on inputs from the evaporator temperature sensor, the high-pressure switch, and the engine management system. If any of those signal pathways have a fault — particularly a high-resistance connection caused by heat-stressed connector pins — the system will cut the compressor out as a safety measure.
